This page is for people who stay on Bantayan for weeks or months – digital workers, retirees and families visiting relatives. It collects what we could confirm from official sources and says clearly where we have no confirmed information yet. For visa and legal questions it points to the authorities; it is not legal advice.

Visa and immigration
Many visitors enter visa-free and are first admitted for 30 days. Whether this applies to you depends on your passport – check with the Bureau of Immigration (BI) before you travel. The BI contact list shows no office in Bantayan, Bogo or Danao (checked 8 November 2026).
Nearest offices (BI contact list, 8 November 2026):
- Cebu Immigration District Office, 4th Floor, Gmall of Cebu, A. Soriano Avenue, Cebu City – open 9:00 am–7:30 pm · (032) 345-6441 / 345-6442 · 0969 586 6079 · [email protected]

Neither is on Bantayan – one is in Cebu City, the other on Mactan Island in Lapu-Lapu City. Plan a full day trip with the ferry and the bus (see Getting here), and check the ferry page before you go.
Fees on the BI website (adult, passport that does not need a visa; the BI says the fees are “as of 06 March 2014” and may change without notice):

- Maximum stay: the BI page names a maximum allowable stay of 36 months for nationals who do not need a visa.
- Different rules apply to visa-required nationals, children and some passports. Only the BI can tell you what applies to you – ask the office before your stay runs out.
Retiring here: the Philippine Retirement Authority runs the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) from age 40. For the SRRV Classic, the bank deposit starts at US$15,000 (age 50 and over, with a lifetime pension of at least US$800 a month, or US$1,000 with dependents); other SRRV types have different rules, plus a processing fee of US$1,500 (PRA website, November 2026). Renting a home
- What it costs: we found no reliable online prices. Listings seen in search results show about ₱23,000–70,000 a month (online listings for houses, mostly aimed at foreigners and holiday stays; not confirmed). Homes for locals are usually found by asking around and are rarely posted online – our local guide is collecting real examples.
- How to look: walk around the town you like, ask at the barangay hall, at small stores and at your guesthouse.
- Before you pay: see the place in person, agree in writing what is included (power, water, internet), and never send a deposit to a stranger online. Fake listings and booking pages are a known problem – read how to avoid booking scams.
- Electricity account: BANELCO asks for proof of the right to use the lot (for example consent of the lot owner, a deed of sale or a tax declaration) for a new connection. Ask whose name the electricity account is in and who pays the bill.
Buying or leasing land – the basic rules, not legal advice:
- Foreigners generally cannot acquire land in the Philippines (1987 Constitution, Article XII). Exceptions include inheritance and limited rights for former natural-born Filipinos.
- Foreigners may lease private land for a home for up to 25 years, renewable once for 25 years (Presidential Decree 471).
- A foreigner may buy a condominium unit as long as the building stays within the legal limit for foreign ownership (Condominium Act, RA 4726). Whether such projects exist on the island is not confirmed.
- For any purchase or long lease, talk to a lawyer and check the title at the Registry of Deeds.

Ask PLDT whether your exact address can be connected – being in a fiber town does not mean every street has it. A mobile SIM with data is a useful backup.
Electricity and water
- Electricity: the Bantayan Island Electric Cooperative (BANELCO) supplies the island. Homes on the main island paid about ₱11.20 per kWh before VAT (homes on the main island, November 2026). The rate changes every month – BANELCO posts it on its website. Contact: 0931 117 6126 · 0943 701 2696 · (032) 460 9281 · (032) 460 9112.
- Air-con adds up: at this rate, an air-conditioner running every night raises the bill a lot – compare your usage with the rate before you sign a rent.
- Power cuts: we have found no official record of how often they happen. Ask neighbours and keep a power bank charged.
- Water: we have not found a water utility or official water rates for the three towns. Many households buy drinking water at refilling stations. Ask your landlord where the tap water comes from.
Health
- Bantayan District Hospital (BDH), Bantayan town (reported in barangay Ticad): run by the Province of Cebu, a Level 1 hospital (since April 2024). It began doing major surgeries in January 2026 and has its own ambulances (Province of Cebu, 2026).
- Municipal health offices: Santa Fe’s offers consultations, maternal care, vaccinations and health certificates (town website). Address and hours are still to be confirmed.
- Serious cases go to the mainland: the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo City (damaged in the September 2025 earthquake; emergency care and operations reported running again in October 2025) or the big hospitals in Cebu City.
- Pharmacies: we have no confirmed list yet.
Money and shopping
- Cash still rules for tricycles, markets and small stores. ATMs are few and can run dry on holidays – see Money & ATMs.
- Bank: Landbank lists a Bantayan branch ((032) 326 2290 / 460 0078 · [email protected]).
- GCash and Maya: work in some places; where you can top up on the island is not confirmed.
- Markets: Bantayan town has a public market; exact locations of markets on the island are being checked. Supermarkets on the island are not confirmed yet; our local guide is checking shops, pharmacies and laundries.
- Prices: our local guide is collecting real shop prices; until then, see what 2026 travel guides report on our pages.
Daily life and typhoon season
- Getting around: you can get around by scooter or tricycle. The island is small – see the distances in our itinerary.
- Getting off the island: trips to the mainland usually depend on the ferry. Plan visa runs, flights and doctor visits with a buffer day.
- Typhoons: storms near Bantayan come most often in November and December (Best time to visit). Super Typhoon Yolanda crossed the island in 2013.
- Be ready: keep drinking water, cash, food for a few days, a charged power bank and a torch at home; tie down loose roof parts; know where your barangay’s evacuation centre is. Santa Fe’s disaster office (MDRRMO) offers rescue and early warning – see its town page.
- Follow official warnings: PAGASA for storms, the Philippine Coast Guard for sea trips.
